Why Fractals?

Fractal mathematics is a way of understanding the "book of nature." Fractals have nonlinear properties that help explain non-regularity, discontinuity, evolution, and change.

Classical geometries fail to describe the ruggedness and subtleties of a complex natural world. Natural phenomena such as turbulence, river networks, soil hydrology, lightning, avalanches, earthquakes, volcanic activities and distribution of leaves, updrafts and downdrafts, rain areas, clouds, interstellar clouds, sunspots and galaxies cannot be described simply.

On other scales and systems, fractals also describe well ecological dynamics, blood flow in veins and arteries, the nervous system, heart rhythms, even music, and art.

Since fractals are the geometry of nature, then fractals can also describe the complexities of human psychology and culture.
